Enlighten draws from the memories of the filmmaker’s grandparents, who experienced the eruption of the Capelinhos Volcano on the island of Faial in 1957. Rather than reconstructing this historical event, the film focuses on the fragmented and mutable nature of memory, exploring personal forgetfulness in parallel with the transformation of the landscape and the effects of time on the physical archives of the eruption—namely, the growth of fungi. In this context, the archive is not used as a narrative source, but as evidence of forgetting, proposing a metaphor in which oblivion materializes as fungus. The film emerged from an artistic research project developed between 2020 and 2023, within the master’s program in Aesthetics and Artistic Studies, with a specialization in Cinema and Photography.
