HEY is a video tutorial that alludes to the possible action of overstriking coins, an action popularised by the suffragettes and the Irish republican army (IRA). While the suffragettes struck “votes for women”, the IRA struck “IRA” and “TROOPS OUT”, both on British coins. This overstriking worked as a means to publicise their respective causes by using existing mechanisms of power.
In HEY, the coin used is a common 50 euro cents coin, shared by all euro countries, it could however have been any other coin, from any other geo-political location. The striking of HEY onto the coin plays with the expression itself. “Hey” conveys different meanings. It is a call of attention – hey! I’m here – it is a salute – hey, how are you – as well a mode of expressing displeasure – hey, look at what you’re doing. In this video, Hey is a mode of exemplifying all that could be in its place – hey, this is what I mean.
